Montreal woman speaks out after alleged bruises from police

A Montreal woman says her normal commute to work quickly turned to distress after an encounter with police.
Melody Ryder says she got off the bus near Parc Avenue and Fairmount west in Montreal on Wednesday and quickly crossed the street, when a Montreal police officer stopped her.
Ryder claims before the officer said why she was being stopped — for jay-walking — he grabbed her arm multiple times. Right after the alleged incident, she took out her phone and started recording the next few minutes of the interaction.
She says she was mistreated and is left with bruises. Read More
Police Ethics Commission sees over 2,000 racial profiling complaints

Complaints filed against Quebec police officers with the ethics commission have skyrocketed. In the span of 20 years – it’s more than doubled.

Images from a textbook at Centennial High School in Greenfield Park, Quebec has been called out as racist. Local business owner and civil rights advocate Joel DeBellefeuille was tagged on social media in a photo posted by a longtime friend whose child attends the high school on Montreal’s South Shore. DeBellefeuille shared one photo of a page featuring illustrations of gangsters, at least one of whom is clearly a caricature of a person of colour. Read More

Quebec invests $900,000 to train police to avoid racial profiling

Joel DeBellefeuille still remembers when he was racially profiled in 2012.
“Racial profiling is sometimes conscious as well as unconscious,” he told Global News, “and in my case, I think it was a bit of both.”
He’s glad the Quebec government is investing over $900 thousand in a new police training programme.
“The decision by Quebec to help the police force understand what racial profiling is, how it makes people feel, is definitely a step in the right direction,” said DeBellefeuille. Read More
